Light Eating for Survival

Light Eating for Survival by Marcia Acciardo (Wethersfield, Conn., 1977). I have a soft spot for old‑school raw publications and I can’t recommend this book highly enough. It features dishes that are ‘frugal, simple, satisfying and high’. The preface states: ‘Please share this book with someone you love or is in need of love’. I’m sharing - hello, new friends.

Hi Marcia, Page 92 - Mild laxative Balls recipe: Carob powder is mentioned twice. Could you please let me know what the other ingredient is. Thanks very much. Regards Glynnis Steyn - healthtalk@vodamail.co.za

Hi, I’m afraid I don’t really know as I’m not Marcia! However, I’d imagine 2oz of carob powder and then 1oz of cacao powder or mesquite powder would be very yummy! All best, Fleur

Hello Glynnis and Fleur,

It is amazing to me how many people loved my book and are still talking about it even though it has been out of print for so many years. Thank you!

I am not sure why you have an incomplete recipe in your book but it should read:

Mild Laxative Balls

1 pint mashed dried fruit: raisins, prunes, dates, figs, or apricots
1 oz carob powder
1 oz ground licorice root
2 oz carob powder
1 oz slippery elm
honey, molasses, or maple syrup to taste

Mix well. Oil your hands first and roll into little balls in shredded coconut.

I would certainly encourage you to improvise with any of my recipes.

Best wishes,

Marcia

Hi Marcia

How fantastic to hear from you! Yes, your book is still very much appreciated after all these years.

Have you any words of wisdom for those of us who are much newer than you are on the raw (or rawish) path?

Very best wishes to you,

Fleur

You are too kind. Lets see...

Enjoy your life to the fullest and those who share it with you.

Find work that feels good and provides you with financial independence.

Healthy, natural foods are very important, and have served me well over the years. I am no longer a food purist, I still eat very well - whole, fresh, natural, local whenever possible foods, and yes lots of raw fruits and vegetables daily.

I love to walk, hike, swim, and work out to stay in shape and have been very healthy compared to others my age.

Trust yourself, and know that each of us are unique, and what might be good for one person, may not be right for another.

Be happy, be positive, and always look on the bright side of life. Its so much better that way!

Best Wishes,

Marcia

Dearest Marcia

This is priceless, fantastic advice. I will try and make a blog post about it over the next week as I fear too many people will miss such inspiration, tucked away in this 'comments' section from 2008!

With very best wishes

Fleur

I'm joining ... I'm also not the most prolific blogger/poster but I LOVE the idea of a Light Eating for Survival fan page! Fx
